| Science The Science program is presented as an
activity-oriented subject to the greatest degree possible
and covers all major science areas including: biology, life
science, earth science, space science and physical science.
Science is an active process used to experience and understand
the world and beyond. This process is powered by the natural
desire to expand and refine what we already know.
At the intermediate elementary grades (4-6), science continues
to be built upon a child's natural inquisitiveness. At this
point in a child's schooling, a substantial knowledge base
is evident as well as the ability to formally gather and
work with data in a purposeful way. Major studies should
emphasize areas that are personally relevant to this stage
of development. Students in grades 4-6 should acquire specific
fundamental knowledge and apply elementary scientific process
to their studies. They should recognize systems, cycles,
and the inter-relatedness of parts and whole and have a
growing awareness of people's ability to impact systems
as well as their responsibility to do so knowledgeably.
The ultimate goal of science education is that of science
literacy. This means that students will be expected to build
knowledge and understanding of the natural and man-made
world through the scientific processes and integrated studies.
By the end of Grade 4:
° Students will demonstrate an understanding of,
and be able to practice, the basic processes which scientists
use to obtain and continually revise knowledge about the
natural world.
° Students will recognize and understand the wide variety
of similarities and differences that exist among objects
and events in the natural world.
° Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact
of science and technology on society.
° Students will display a sense of curiosity and wonder
about the natural world, and demonstrate an increasing
awareness of the interdependence between all living things
and the environment.
