Curriculum Overview |
Language Arts
The language arts program provides instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, spelling, vocabulary, handwriting, and the structure of language. Instruction occurs in a whole class setting, small groups, and on an individual basis, as appropriate. A variety of methods and materials are used to teach basic skills, extend thinking, and promote and refine the language development of the students.
In the intermediate years students will demonstrate a growing proficiency in a number of reading applications. Specific reading instruction continues at this level while students employ independent reading skills to all areas of learning. They will view reading as a critical personal resource for gaining knowledge and understanding.
In writing students will demonstrate skills that allow them to apply writing to all areas of learning. Writing instruction reinforces basic structure and conventions while expanding into personal styles, purposes, and applications. Students will now be writing for a variety of purposes and show evidence of independent editing and revision. Their writing should show an increased clarity of thought and ability to develop and support central ideas.
Social Studies
The intermediate grades focus on New Hampshire, the United States, and the world, as the students study geography, history, economics, and government. Environmental education, current events, and character and citizenship are naturally occurring elements of the curriculum.
Grade 5 Scope and Sequence
The fifth grade curriculum emphasizes the history of the United States from 1800 to 1900, while integrating New Hampshire history of the same time period. (Industrial Revolution, Civil War, Westward Movement, etc.)
Grade 6 Scope and Sequence
The sixth grade curriculum focuses on the study of various regions in the Eastern Hemisphere-past and present-including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. (Units will address and explore historical, cultural, geographic, economic, and political aspects of the region, including when possible, their relationship to New Hampshire history.)
